Borrowing basics

Personal loans, lines of credit, and more — choose the tool, not the sales pitch.

Different borrowing products solve different problems. Learn how the payment, access, fees, and flexibility change before you choose one.

Compare personal loans

A fixed loan versus a line of credit

A personal loan usually gives you a defined amount with a fixed repayment schedule. A line of credit lets you draw, repay, and potentially draw again, often with a variable rate. That flexibility can be useful, but it makes the balance and future payment harder to predict.

Ask what the flexibility costs

Compare the APR or interest-rate structure, annual or maintenance fees, draw rules, minimum payments, repayment period, and whether the rate can change. A product that looks convenient can cost more if the balance stays open or the rate rises.

Match the product to the problem

Use a defined loan when you know the amount and want a clear finish line. Consider revolving credit only when you understand how access works and can keep the balance under control. Credit cards, personal loans, and consolidation loans each have different costs and protections, so compare the actual disclosure—not only the product label.
